The Importance of Protein for Strength and Energy

Protein becomes more important as you move through your 50s and beyond.

Each decade, you naturally lose muscle, and with it often goes strength, balance, and metabolism. Eating enough protein helps protect that muscle so you can stay active, independent, and steady on your feet.

It also supports bone health, immune function, and helps repair everyday wear and tear in the body. Many women focus on eating less as they age, but what really matters is eating smarter, and protein is a key part of that.

Getting enough protein can also help with energy and appetite control.

It keeps you fuller for longer, supports steady blood sugar, and reduces constant grazing or cravings. This can make maintaining a healthy weight feel much easier and more natural. In my experience as a health coach, when women gently increase their protein, they often notice they feel stronger, clearer headed, and more satisfied between meals.

Small changes here can make a big difference to how you feel each day.

Here are easy, everyday ways you can gently guide your audience to increase it without feeling overwhelmed.

Start with a simple target Most women over 50 do well with around 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal. Three meals a day can easily reach 60 to 90 grams. Download my Free Protein tracker here

Think “protein first” at every meal Before carbs or extras, ask

Where is the protein?

Examples • Eggs or Greek yoghurt at breakfast • Chicken, tuna, tofu, or salmon at lunch • Fish, beans, or lean meat at dinner.

Breakfast is usually the lowest protein meal.

Easy swaps • Toast only → eggs on toast • Cereal → Greek yoghurt with nuts and seeds • Smoothie → add protein powder or collagen • Porridge → stir in protein powder or chia seeds

Add, don’t overhaul Small additions feel easier than big changes.
